Logging positive entries, praise and rewards
The Behaviour Log is designed to show a complete profile of a pupil’s behaviour; therefore balanced recording, which includes positive incidents, improvement and rewards, is essential. Encouraging teachers to look for and log progress, not only provides evidence of the impact of specific strategies; the process itself prompts teachers to praise pupils and this positive recognition enhances the pupil’s self-esteem and improves the teacher/pupil relationship.
As a result of our ongoing dialogue with schools and teachers, we recognise the need for teachers to be able to log positive entries quickly and easily. Using the ‘Add Positive Incidents’ screen, Behaviour Log offers users the facility add a positive entry to an individual pupil, or to add the same entry to several pupils. The system can also be customised to automatically generate reward certificates and letters home. These automated letters/certificates are downloaded into a designated folder in the school’s admin area ready to be printed and sent home.
All positive entries can be viewed, and or printed, from the various ‘Incident Information’ screens. They also feature in the ‘Pupil Overview’; a chronology showing all of the entries for the selected pupil i.e. positive entries, negative incidents and strategies. Each type of entry is colour coded, providing an immediate visual representation of impact and balance. The balance of the logging is summarised at the end of the Pupil Overview showing what percentage of the total number of entries were positive. In addition to assisting with strategy evaluation, information relating to the balance between positive and negative logging can be invaluable in identifying individual and whole school training opportunities/needs.
